What is Alpaca?

The fleece from an alpaca is used to make the most sought after natural yarn, knitted garments, and cloth in the world today. The Alpaca fleece is shorn without injury to the animal in the spring or early summer each year, and is spun into wonderfully soft yarns. These yarns are then used to create fine quality knitted or woven clothing. In addition to the naturally fine characteristics Alpaca fleece does not contain lanolin and has little guard hair which make an exceptionally warm, soft, and light finished product.

While the majority of the worlds Alpaca comes from South America, there are now over 40,000 animals on ranches in North America with similar numbers in Europe and Australia. These quiet gentle animals provide a renewable crop of fleece each year of their 20-25 year life, providing much joy to the many fortunate people who raise them and to those fortunate enough to be able to wear the finished product.
